Interval-TrainingIt seems as though there is always a new “must-do” workout routine going viral within the exercise communities, so it can be hard to keep track of exactly how each of these workouts are supposed to help you. For example, recently you may have been hearing all about interval training but maybe you’re still in the dark on what exactly it is and what it does for your body.

Interval Training

Interval training, or high intensity interval training (HIIT), is alternating portions of your workout between high intensity aerobic activity and lower intensity aerobic activity. Aerobic exercises can be anything from running to cycling to swimming meaning that regardless of your passions and preferences you can find an HIIT workout that works for you! You can go from sprinting to walking, cycling full speed ahead to gently pedaling, or swimming with all your power to doggy paddling and no matter what the constant motion at varying intensities will give you a great workout with noticeable results.

How do you Know if you should Start Interval Training?

Of course different workout routines help people achieve different goals. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, you should more seriously consider HIIT if your goals are to:

  • Burn fat without losing muscle
  • Improve your cardiovascular health
  • Boost your metabolism naturally
  • Increase your stamina
  • Improve your cholesterol

HIIT is also great if you don’t have access to gym equipment, can’t dedicate a substantial amount of time to exercise, or are bored with your current exercise routine and are looking for an ever-changing challenge. Whether you’re new to the exercise game and aren’t sure where to start, or you’re a regular at your local gym looking to switch up your routine, it is likely that interval training will be right for you.
